Brennan Johnson's bundled first-half goal helped Tottenham Hotspur win a scrappy Europa League final 1-0 against Manchester United on Wednesday, as they cast aside their domestic woes to end a painful 17-year trophy drought.
Johnson scored the only goal of the game in the 42nd minute, after Pape Sarr swung in a cross. Johnson beat Luke Shaw at the near post and sent the ball past United goalkeeper Andre Onana to give Spurs the lead. The strike was as scrappy as the match, with both teams enduring hugely-disappointing seasons.
United are languishing in 16th place while Spurs sit 17th in England's top flight, but the Londoners put their Premier League problems behind them when the final whistle went off, and celebrated a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Tottenham's victory was a dream-come-true moment for Son Heung-min, the South Korea captain, who finally won his first title with the club after joining Spurs 10 years ago.
"I believed it that from Day One that we can win the Europa League. And today's the final day, that happens, and more than happy. Luckiest guy, happiest guy in the world," Son said after the historic victory. "As a captain of club, so, so proud of this team and proud of the players and well, well deserved."
