In response to the US government's ban on Harvard University enrolling international students and its directive for current students to transfer, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) issued a statement on May 23, offering unconditional admission to affected students.
HKUST has invited all international undergraduates and postgraduates currently enrolled at Harvard, as well as those with admission offers, to continue their studies at the university. It has pledged to prioritize application reviews, credit transfers and provide tailored support – including visa assistance and housing. A dedicated task force has been established to ensure a smooth transition.
On the same day, Hong Kong Secretary for Education Dr Choi Yuk-lin expressed support, encouraging outstanding students worldwide to study in the Hong Kong region. She noted that the Education Bureau has urged local universities to facilitate admissions for eligible students and is working with the Harvard Club of Hong Kong to provide further support.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has also addressed the issue, emphasizing that China-US educational cooperation is mutually beneficial. She reiterated China's opposition to politicizing academic exchanges, warning that such actions damage the international image of the US. She affirmed China's commitment to protecting the legitimate rights of Chinese students and scholars abroad.
