Chinese No. 2 seed Wang Chuqin defeated Hugo Calderano of Brazil 4-1 in the men's singles final at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday, lifting his first major singles trophy.
After the first game was tied 3-3, Wang scored three straight points to lead but soon saw his advantage wiped out by the opponent who earned the game point 10-7. However, Wang bounced back with five straight points to take it 12-10 and lead 1-0 in the match.
Wang was nothing but dominant in the second game, which he clinched 11-3 to double his lead to 2-0.
Calderano's rally came in the third game in which he first built a 6-2 advantage and then continued to extend it point by point before claiming the game 11-4.
Wang fought back immediately in the fourth game with a 5-0 start. He soon increased his lead to 10-1 before closing it at 11-2, restoring his advantage to 3-1 in the decider.
Wang left no chance for Calderano in the fourth game by staying ahead with a three-point lead. In the end, he sealed it 11-7 to win the title.

On the women's side, singles defending champion and world No. 1 Sun Yingsha of China defeated her compatriot, second-ranked Wang Manyu 4-3, adding to the mixed doubles crown she had claimed earlier at the tournament.
Roared on by a lively crowd, Sun prevailed over the 2021 world champion in a thrilling final, winning 11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 5-11, 12-10, 11-13, 11-7 in 88 minutes.
Wang saved three match points including an edge ball that went in her favor and went on to win the sixth game and led 3-0 in the deciding game, before Sun took four straight points from 7-7.
"My faith wavered at one point, but I just hung in there and fought to the last point," Sun said. "Manyu and I have been playing against each other since we were children. Our games are always very close."
Wang pocketed a gold of her own in the women's doubles final by pairing with Kuai Man to beat Austria's Sofia Polcanova and Romania's Bernadette Szocs in straight games. Firmly taking control, the Chinese pair triumphed 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 over 21 minutes.
