China's Wang Xinyu came up short in a hard fought three set loss to 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu while her male compatriot Buyunchaokete was also eliminated from the first round of the French Open on Monday.

2021 US Open champion Raducanu fought hard to win the first set 7-5, but Wang bounced back to take a comfortable 5-1 lead and took a 6-4 victory despite Raducanu's late surge in the second set.

22-year-old Raducanu controlled the pace to seal the win 6-3 in the final set. She will face the fifth-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland in the second round.

Wang has had notable success over the last few years, especially in doubles tennis. In 2023 at Roland Garros, Wang, 23, triumphed in the women's doubles, and in 2024 she pocketed a silver in the mixed doubles at the Paris Olympic Games.

Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen now becomes the only Chinese player still in the French Open women's singles draw.

Buyunchaokete, 23, was eliminated by Austria's Filip Misolic 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-1. The world No. 70 started strong, firing an ace to claim the first set 7-5. However, the momentum shifted as Misolic edged two tiebreakers.

Buyunchaokete, competing in his third Grand Slam main draw and fresh off a runner-up finish at an ATP Challenger event in Turin, battled valiantly but faltered in critical moments. His season tiebreaker record plummeted to 1-11 after Misolic dominated the fourth set 6-1. The Austrian advances to face 27th seed Denis Shapovalov, marking his second consecutive second-round appearance in Paris.
