As the 2025 Chinese Traditional Dragon Boat Competition (Guizhou · Tongren · Bijiang) looms on the horizon, Bijiang District in Tongren City, Guizhou Province – renowned for its dragon boat racing traditions – hosted an eye-catching dragon boat tour on May 25, offering a spectacular preview of the upcoming main event.
More than a hundred vessels, ranging from elaborately decorated painted pleasure boats and bamboo dragon boats to traditional dragon boats, converged along the Jinjiang River.
The vibrant display of local traditions, including the ceremonial "Water Gate Crossing," created a visual feast that left a lasting impression on the gathering of spectators.
The river was transformed into a moving stage on the day of the event. Three painted pleasure boats led the procession, showcasing captivating ethnic song and dance routines. Dozens of traditional dragon boats followed suit. With the rhythmic pounding of drums, paddlers not only propelled their boats forward but also engaged in a playful water-splashing tradition during the "Water Gate Crossing" ritual.
Dragon boat racing is a cherished tradition in Tongren that unites multiple ethnic groups. In 2011, this cultural practice was enshrined on the national intangible cultural heritage list, making it a key catalyst for the local cultural and tourism industries.
The 2025 Chinese Traditional Dragon Boat Competition in Tongren is set to take place from May 30 to 31 and promises to be a grand spectacle with hundreds of boats vying for victory on the water.
